Detroit 6.10 : The Detroit Shock won their third WNBA title in six seasons on Sunday, beating the San Antonio Silver Stars 76-60 in Game 3. Detroit, who swept the league's best regular-season club, became the second team in WNBA history to win a third championship. Only the Houston Comets, who won the first four (1997-2000), have more. Los Angeles (2001, 2002) is the only other team with more than one.
LA Spar. 4.10 : Candace Parker received the WNBA's most valuable player award, becoming the first player to win the award along with the rookie of the year honors. The Los Angeles star was unanimously selected rookie of the year. Parker, the top overall draft pick this year, averaged 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. She had a high of 40 points and grabbed 10 or more rebounds in 17 games. She led the league in double-doubles with 17, led the league in rebounding and led rookies in scoring, blocks (2.3 bpg) and minutes (33.6 mpg).
Seattle 29.8 : Lauren Jackson, the reigning WNBA MVP, had surgery on her right ankle Thursday in Australia. She is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks, which would mean any return to the Storm would be during the WNBA playoffs. Jackson made the surgery decision while she was playing for Australia at the Olympics in Beijing. She had injections in her ankle to get through the Olympics.
