Latest Transfer Rumours Of Francesc Fabregas Returning To Spain
As soon as the January transfer window opened the same story linking Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas to Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid resurfaced.
However, Arsene Wenger appears to view it all with a pinch of salt. At a press conference ahead of his side's home game against Everton, the Frenchman echoed the words of Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, insisting the Gunners' captain was committed to the north London club.
In answering a question about Fabregas' immediate future, Wenger replied: "I see that you [want to] test my sense of humour in 2010, and am happy to reply to that with a big smile.
"I cannot do anything [about the speculation], all we can do is talk, and talk and talk.
"We have worked very hard with all of our players, and they all have a very long commitment, tied [to the club] up until 2015. We have a long-term plan to be a winning team, and Cesc Fabregas is part of that."
With the Spanish clubs promising major signings during presidential elections, there is always the possibility of one offering a fee that could be considered too good to refuse, but Wenger believes Arsenal are in a strong enough financial position to rebute any offer.
"The fee comes only in mind," he said.
"Here we have sport as priority No 1. We can keep thinking like that because we have a healthy management and are not in financial need.
"I have always fought for the club to be in a strong financial position because I feel any decision we make must have the footballing interest of the club first."
