Cristiano Ronaldo Was Not Fit To Play For Portugal – Real Madrid’s Jorge Valdano
Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo should not have played for Portugal against Hungary due to his physical condition.
"What is clear is that the injury he has now is not a new injury," the director general is quoted as saying by AS.
"It could have been caused by a blow to the affected area. He was most probably not in a condition to return."
However, Valdano recognised that the match was of "utmost importance" for Carlos Queiroz's side, and that he understands why 'CR9' wanted to play.
"I understand the commitment shown to the national team by the player, as he wanted to help," Valdano noted.
Portugal's World Cup fate is now in their own hands as they sit second in Group 1, one point ahead of Sweden. Although they will be without Ronaldo, they will be confident of victory when they face Malta in Guimaraes on Wednesday.
