Ajax Coach Martin Jol Praises Jan Vertonghen And Toby Alderweireld

Ajax have been far from impressive on the defensive side of the ball in the past couple of seasons, but things are looking quite solid in the Amsterdam side's back line this term.

Head coach Martin Jol has taken the time to praise Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld for their outstanding performances.

"Both Toby and Jan are naturally gifted defenders. They are extremely talented. Toby is a typical defender and is an excellent stopper. I saw him play twice during pre-season and I was convinced of his qualities," said Jol to Het Nieuwsblad.

"However, he is capable of so much more than just marking a striker out of the game. He is quite good on the ball as well and I see him as a future star player.

"Jan used to play in midfield a lot before I fielded him as a centre-back and he is still adapting to his new position. His progress is impressive though and he could become one of the best defenders I have ever worked with in my career.

"He has physical strength, vision, technique, pace and he is strong in the air. There is no doubt about it that he will join a European powerhouse one day."
